A PEDIATRIC PROVIDER’S GUIDE TO SPECIAL EDUCATION: IEPs, 504 Plans, and Accommodations After referring your pediatric patient for a psychological evaluation, you reviewed the report and diagnosis with the parent, prescribed medications, and provided a detailed physician’s note to the child’s school, requesting the patient be considered for an IEP. Upon returning for his follow-up visit, you learn your patient did not qualify for an IEP at school, despite your best efforts. Sound familiar? The purpose of this seminar is to inform pediatric care providers of the various levels of intervention, progress monitoring, services, supports, and accommodations that are available to students in the public school setting. In addition, you will learn how a student qualifies for Special Education services and why a documented diagnosis (I.e. ADHD, specific learning disorder, autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, oppositional defiant disorder, etc), does not automatically qualify a student for special education services.
